AL4 support removed           | All al_version.startswith('4.') branches deleted
DB lifecycle (Fortran)        | N IDS -> 1 imas_open + 1 imas_close (was N x 2)
DB lifecycle (C++)            | init_db opens once; close_db called once in deallocate
IDSDescription simplification | 7 legacy fields -> 1 URI string (all languages)
MEMORY_BACKEND workarounds    | Removed; URI API handles all backends uniformly
ctypes string padding         | memset/memmove replaces Python list comprehensions
Default persistent backend    | MDSplus -> HDF5
